Taking Care of Your Vehicle in Extreme Heat

Here in the Pacific Northwest, we had a record breaking heatwave in June 2021 with more hot weather forecasted this week. Extreme temperatures seem to be becoming much more common. While everyone is learning just how to prepare for such occurrences, we remind you that our vehicles are no exception to experiencing the effects of high heat.  If you notice the temperature is going to be high, you have a great opportunity to check that your vehicle and its components are in good working order.

Fluids

Checking fluid levels– specifically engine coolant– should be the first item on your checklist. Not surprisingly this is imperative to best engine function. Heat can exacerbate evaporation due to leaks and hose damage.

Cooling Fan

This functions by bringing air through the radiator to regulate engine temperature. Mechanical or computer problems with the cooling fan can have disastrous consequences for your car’s engine in exceptionally high temperatures.

Air Conditioning

Is your air conditioning blowing less cold than it used to? Definitely time to bring it in.  A change in cooling temperatures could indicate a leak or other problems.

Battery Age

Car batteries are really only meant to last 4-5 years. Hot weather is especially hard on batteries due to higher evaporation rate of electrolyte fluid inside of them.

Oil Change

Old or dirty oil decreases the lubrication ability in your car’s engine. Good engine lubrication is critical in higher temperatures. High viscosity oil will help your engine function better in high temperatures.

Tires

Check each tire for wear, age cracks, or damage. Check the inflation pressure in all the tires, including the spare. Underinflated tires make the tires run hot and can increase the risk of a blowout.

Wax the Body

The body of your vehicle should be waxed or sprayed with a protectant of your choice to help shield the paint from the ultraviolet rays from the sun. This also helps protect against smog from urban areas and smoke from wildfires. Not sure which products are best? Ask your Service Advisor to show you the Griots products we carry in-store.
